Resources for Finding an "Akiya" Without a Realtor

Dilapidated house in Japan. Photo taken by a family member.

Listed alphabetically, here are all of the resources I found for buying an Akiya without a realtor. There are likely more resources and websites out there beyond what I have found and listed here, but this should get you started and even maybe help you find your dream home without needing to do any research on your own. For each website I've found I have listed the name, link, a short description of it, and the general areas/prices you will find on it, as some websites are specific to things such as certain prefectures of Japan. Another way to find properties would be to speak to a prefecture's local government official or look around in-person in Japan. Some of the listings on these sites may be managed by a real estate agent, but one management company does not own the site and some are government or individual-owned listings which is why they are included here instead of the other post.

Requires you to sign up to fully view houses, but has listings available for all prefectures and has prices listed in both yen and dollars. Has extensive list of facilities for each property and distance from local resources such as schools, train stations, and convenience stores.

Government recognized site. Requires google translate. Search for homes based on prefecture listed in yen. Limited number of listings but has more than LiFull Home's. Has a large amount of information on each property such as type, age, and size.

Official Hokkaido house search site. Only houses in Hokkaido available for search. Requires google translate. Extensive filters available, has options for land and house purchasing and a large amount of information about the property including size, history, and utilities.

Government-recognized site. Requires google translate, search for homes based on prefecture listed in yen. Limited number of listings. Has options for land or house purchasing and a list of the facilities and additional town information on each listing.

Bulletin board house-buying site. Needs google translate, "I'll take it" is the translation for the 買います(kaimasu) button to search for houses to buy. Has listings for both occupied(rented out) and unoccupied properties. Information about each property varies but can be a bit lacking.

No filters available that work. Needs google translate. Each property usually has photos, but listing information varies depending on the poster. Usually need to navigate outside of the site to contact the poster for more information.

A bit of a cramped website. Can select general area and then prefecture by scrolling down to the property search section. Southern Kanto contains Chiba and Tokyo prefectures. "To search for..." brings up more filter options. Prices in yen. Listing details include utilities, location, and size information. Have to fill out form to request more information on a property. Seems to be limited to rural properties.
